Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

The Children’s Museum Store polls kid-experts to determine the top 10 toys for the 2014 holiday shopping season.

Parents are always looking for gifts to give during the holidays that are as special as their children. It can be a daunting task: find something educational that appeals to a child’s creativity, their sense of adventure, their unique ability to build something cool.

Don’t forget to browse your local children’s museums! Oftentimes, the best stuff can be found at museum shops –toys that have a special something you can’t find anywhere else. These gifts can also give back: to the community, to other children, to support the museum’s mission. How cool is that?

For 16 years, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has conducted the Kid-tested, Kid Approved event. Local kids of all ages are invited to visit The Museum Store to play with and then vote on their favorite toys. Thirty of the store’s most popular toys are offered up as potential picks, and the kids get to check all of them out, right there in the store … until they decide which ones will make the top 10 list of fun, unique and educational toys that the kids love best –and parents can add to their own lists for holiday shopping. Here, this year’s Kid-Tested, Kid Approved selections are listed in order of most votes:

  1. Super Slam Basketball
  2. Original Flying Turtle
  3. Foxfire Glow Phantoms Thinking Putty
  4. Hoberman Switch Pitch
  5. Snap Circuits – Motion
  6. Mini OgoDisk Set
  7. Switchback Racetrack
  8. Hexbug Aquabots
  9. Playmobil My Secret Play Box – Dragon`s Lair
  10. Take ‘N’ Play Anywhere Fashion Spotlight Magnetic Playset

112614_CRTPost_ChildrensMuseumLogoWith the Kid-Tested, Kid Approved initiative, the museum hopes to lend a hand to parents who are looking to discover what most interests their children, straight from the kids themselves. Each Kid-Tested, Kid Approved selection is available for purchase at the Museum’s award-winning store and online retail site. On each individual online product page, read real reviews from the kid-expert testers and other clues for each toy’s rank. What’s more – all purchases help support the museum’s mission.

As the Children’s Museum tells you, start shopping with confidence – now you know what your kids want and you know what they like!

Love, Linda

091614_CRTPost_LoveLinda_DanceFashion meets health with kids being the winners.

After working in the entertainment industry for many years, Linda Brukman Brown pursues her love of knitting, selling her own knit designs during her lunch breaks to stores on trendy Melrose and Montana Avenues in Los Angeles, California.

Later, with products in over 150 stores nationwide –and a love of books and book art- Linda decides to re-launch her line as Love, Linda – The Art of Reading, curating unique children’s illustrations by fine artists from all over “to bring their creative imagination into your homes.”

091614_CRTPost_LoveLinda_DogGlassesMade in the USA. The Oak Park, CA-based company, now in their twenty-second year, produces a full line of tees, one pieces and more designed with art from children’s book illustrators such as Mary Jane Begin, Jennifer Goldfinger, Daniel J. Mahoney, Amy Schimler and others. Her newest collection is a line of Allergy Awareness clothing.

091614_CRTPost_LoveLinda_ImDairyFreeImagine walking into a school knowing that about 5.9 million children under the age of 18 have a food allergy such as dairy, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat and soy. This is the world Linda found herself in when she began to research why she was having bronchial infections and other related illnesses that have plagued her for almost 12 years.  Frustrated that doctor after doctor could not help her, she turned to an Acupuncturist who is trained in both Eastern and Western medicine. The doctor suggested giving up dairy, focusing on other types of food allergies as well, which led to not only immediate relief and subsidence of Linda’s symptoms, she began a quest for information and a passion to give children, especially those too young to advocate for themselves, a way to tell others about their allergies

091614_CRTPost_LoveLinda_Hugs“My hope is that no child or parent will have to fear going to school or a play date and worry that their allergy will turn their day upside down,” Linda says. Her Allergy Awareness collection features kid friendly designs and slogans, as well as a line of stickers to adorn lunch boxes.

Salvage Maria Clothing

Up-cycled, reclaimed children’s clothing label débuts in Pop-In@Nordstrom nationwide.

091814_CRTPost_SalvageMaria_02Salvage Maria, considered a “tragically hip” collection that launched earlier this year in Los Angeles, uses a mix of salvaged and new fabrics to create ready-to-wear looks for style-savvy kids. The clothing line’s mission is to breathe new life into old favorites – every Salvage Maria piece is proudly Made in the USA from salvaged, upcycled, reclaimed and new fabrics carefully chosen by designer Janeesa Joseph, a native of Dallas, TX with Mexican heritage, and her mother, Maria -who occasionally travels to Mexico to source unique fabrics. Salvage Maria works closely with local vendors to ensure keepsake-quality designs and they also take custom orders, reinventing customers’ personal pieces for their kids.

091814_CRTPost_SalvageMaria_01A few years ago, Janeesa gets inspired by a friend who makes her sons’ play pants out of her husband’s old t-shirts and decides to try her hand at up cycling her own creations. She quickly receives custom orders and a warm reception for her reclaimed, handmade styles. Busy after the birth of her son, Janeesa puts Salvage Maria on the backburner, hoping to revisit her passion project when her son starts preschool. However, the tragic death of Janeesa’s younger brother on Christmas Eve is the catalyst for reviving Salvage Maria as a way to honor her brother’s memory.

091814_CRTPost_SalvageMaria_05“My mother Maria had packed some of his clothes to be donated,” Janeesa says.
“Fortunately, I was able to save some t-shirts and other pieces. With what we had, we designed tees, pants, cardigans and pajamas for my little guy. We also set aside some of my brother’s other items for my sisters whenever they have children. It was bittersweet, intimate and such a special process. It truly encompassed on a personal level the power of ‘Salvage Maria.'”

J091814_CRTPost_SalvageMaria_04ust a few short months after the February 2014 launch, Olivia Kim, director of creative projects at Nordstrom, handpicks Salvage Maria via Instagram to sell its one-of-a-kind creations in Pop-In@Nordstrom at eight flagship locations including Seattle, San Francisco and Dallas, and online at nordstrom.com until October 12. The month-long event is part of an ongoing series of themed pop-up shops curated by Olivia, showcasing an eclectic mix of rising stars in the design world. Salvage Maria’s distinctive handmade fringe vegan leather jackets, hand-distressed jean jackets, fringed vests and reworked vintage tees are available for sale. Salvage Maria is also offering special giveaways at all eight locations.

What a fantastic way to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through October 15, sí?

Yoobi

Give back to teachers and classrooms this back-to-school season.

Yoobi, pronounced “you-be,” means “one for you, one for me.” This dynamic new school supply brand makes colorful, vibrant tools to spark learning and creativity, while also giving back.

073114_CRTPost_Yoobi_01

For each Yoobi item purchased, the company donates additional Yoobi merchandise to a classroom in need, right here in the U.S. –helping to solve a very big problem: With at least 92% of teachers spending their own money on classroom materials and parents struggling to cover the average $635.00 back to school shopping bill, Yoobi hopes to  reach 30,000 classrooms and 750,000 kids by 2015!

Watch their story below to see how:

The idea from Yoobi comes from co-founder and CEO Ido Leffler, who is inspired to give new inspiration, not only to the school supply isle, but to so many classrooms in need of school supplies -a fundamental issue for students and teachers nationwide. For the launch of Yoobi in June, the company contributed an item to a Classroom Pack, which contains essential school supplies, for every Yoobi item purchased. Together with the Kids In Need Foundation, a national nonprofit, Yoobi identified U.S. schools with students who have the greatest need for school supplies to receive the Classroom Packs. Yoobi initially focused on distributing Classroom Packs to the youngest students, K-3rd grade classrooms, because ensuring access to supplies at an early age has the most impact on academic potential.

Adding a fresh pop of color and personality to an aisle that hasn’t been updated in years, Yoobi offers more than 80 different items, from pens to journals and highlighters, all available exclusively at Target, retailing for under $10.

Dynamite Editorials

A behind-the-scenes video of a real live kid’s fashion photo shoot!

Editor’s Note: If you’re a kids fashion designer or an inspired student, take a look at this fun and informative video about how you can get your creations in front of the camera, as well as work behind the scenes at a professional photo shoot, too.

Strutting supermodels routinely ruffle feathers and members of creative teams notoriously butt heads. But at a recent countrified photo shoot staged by Dynamite Editorials, the feathers belonged to local chickens and roosters and the frisky capers of the goats were all in good fun.

060414_CRTPost_DynamiteEditorials_02Gathering creative forces at the generously donated home of the Word family in scenic Trabuco Canyon, located in the foothills of the Santa Ana mountains southeast of Los Angeles, photographer George Arguelles, along with a team of professional fashion stylists, hairstylists and makeup artists, created natural, spontaneous images of child-models along with their parents and siblings in fresh fashions and rustic settings that seem a million miles from even a speck of smog or gridlock.

“I have a passion to capture life’s adventures, and this photo shoot was a great adventure,” George says. “I enjoyed working with the talented models and creative team that Dynamite Editorials brings together. Not only do I learn from them, but we make stunning images as a team.”

It’s an old show-biz adage that no actor should ever share the bill with a child performer or an animal act, to prevent being upstaged. The instant chemistry and charisma of kids and critters at the Trabuco Canyon event confirmed this theory without a doubt.

Highlighting the action was a family birthday party on the charming front porch of the ranch house, complete with bubbles, balloons and hula-hoops. But some of the day’s most memorable images are spontaneous interactions between kids, hens, goats, dogs and one friendly pig, all members of the Word family farm.

060414_CRTPost_DynamiteEditorials_01Some of the fashions, like denim jackets from Homespun Vintage, referenced the project’s rustic Americana roots. In addition to cowboy boots and hats, which would be at home on a hayride or at a hoe-down, the young models also represented edgier expressions with screened tees, tanks, dresses and skirts, tie-dyes, and jeanswear-inspired cotton vests in hot pink. The LA-based designers included Homespun Vintage, Recess Showroom, Julie Smith Kids, Smallshop Showroom and Krys Corvette.

Children and barnyard friends were all on their best behavior. Still, there were surprises, squawks, snorts, nibbles and giggles, resulting in candid images which capture the playfulness of the fashion collections.

060414_CRTPost_DynamiteEditorials_03The Dynamite Editorials creative team followed as children frolicked with barnyard friends, catching many impressions on the fly as well as formally staging set shots. Bringing family groups into the setting added to the relaxed feeling of the day, allowing the children to respond to the environment in a comfortable and natural way.

“Working with children in this expansive natural setting was such a joyful experience,” says TNT Tauna, founder of Dynamite Editorials. “The photographs communicate a playful spirit, and this is often what’s missing from campaigns featuring kids. The feeling our team captured is genuine, not contrived, and so different from anything you could ever get inside a studio under hot lights.”

Dynamite Editorials is an educational production company specializing in editorial photography founded by fashion stylist, blogger and production director TNT Tauna. She began Dynamite Editorials as a platform to enable other artists to create cohesively styled editorials for portfolio use, promotion and publication. Tauna works diligently behind the scenes to organize content creating events, invite influential fashion bloggers to join the fun, and find magazines interested in publishing the content.

Robeez® Buy One Give One Sock Event

The Original Soft Sole brand partners with K.I.D.S. this month on a fabulous giving campaign.

Throughout April, Robeez, beloved maker of the industry-leading Original Soft-Sole pre-walker, is partnering with the equally beloved charitable organization K.I.D.S. (Kids in Distressed Situations) on a spring giving campaign. Right now, for every pair of Robeez socks purchased* at MyRobeez.com, a new pair of socks will be donated to Head Start –the federal government program that promotes school readiness in children ages birth to five from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development.

Robeez and K.I.D.S. are committed to underserved children with a variety of needs, especially lack of shoes and clothing, and we are dedicated to helping the children of Head Start in any way possible, and hope to do so by starting with a simple pair of new socks.

David McCubbin, President of McCubbin Hosiery, a Robeez licensee

041714_CRTPost_Robeez_webpage*The Buy One, Give One Sock Campaign runs until April 30 on MyRobeez.com and is expected to donate at least 1,000 new Robeez socks to Head Start through K.I.D.S.

Robeez was founded in 1994 and offers fun, whimsical footwear and hosiery with functional support for tiny feet. New York, NY-based K.I.D.S. provides new clothes, shoes, toys and books to families in underserved communities, an ideal partner for Robeez on this event.

We are so grateful for this wonderful donation program of Robeez socks from McCubbin Hosiery. Socks are one of the most requested items for donation among the many community charities with which we work. The support for low-income children in Head Start programs is especially important given the challenges faced by the families of these kids.
